What is License Manager?
IBM Host Integration License Manager is a tool used for tracking license information for the products IBM Host On-Demand and IBM Personal Communications.

Why a new License Manager?
Previous versions of IBM Host On-Demand and IBM Personal Communications, had separate license tracking components for each of the products. That made it impossible for users to know/track licenses for the 2 products together.  Those individual components did not have the identification for which flavour of the product was used to access the license (like Standalone HOD, Cached client etc.)

Recently while working with an enterprise customer, they came up with a requirement to track both concurrent and authorized licenses separately. They also needed the ability to derive usability patterns based on the licenses of each product or sub-product being used. This was not possible with the old solution. What was also needed was the ability to generate usage reports for compliance reports.

To satisfy the above requirements, the engineering team worked with the Design thinking team in HCL and came up with the design for a new License Manager, that catered to the above requirements and more. The following sections describe the advantages and salient features of this license manager.

Salient features of License Manager
The picture shows the home page of License Manager.  The new License Manager comes with many salient features, which include the following:

  • The admin page comes with default username & password. Users can change the password by clicking the Admin button on the menu bar.
  • Admin can also set the number of licenses they have purchased. Once number of licenses reaches that number, a warning like be shown - “purchase license count exceeded”.
  • The License Information panel shows combined highest license count for PCOM & HOD.
  • If the user clicks on the More>> hyper link, users are redirected to a page where they can get license usage statistic for a particular period of time.
  • There are separate license count tabs for IBM Personal Communications and IBM Host On-Demand, this is helpful for users using both the products.
  • Users have the option to select the creation of log file daily for both the HOD & PCOM.
  • Users also have the option to download the log files in .csv format and they can select the log level to filter the number of entries to be logged. There are three log levels.

Advantages of HACP License Manager:
  • Centralized, web-based licensing system capable of counting the licenses of both HOD and PCOM simultaneously
  • More detailed information about the clients. For example – product, sub client (what flavour of the product), IP address, MAC Address, machine name, system username along with the license check-in time stamp.
  • The license count increment & decrement reflects immediately as soon as users connect & disconnect from a session.
  • Introduced different types of license counts like Active Licenses, Concurrent License Count, Authorized License count and Cumulative Authorized License count. This will be easier for users to track different types of licenses.
  • Introduced filter option to get the license count information for a particular period of time.
  • The server does not poll the client but the client itself sends status to the server at regular intervals of time (this can be configured) – this ensures that the license manager server is not over-loaded
  • Administrator has the privilege to create users.
